My wife Peggy continually says “we learn what we live”. With this in mind may we all take a moment to look on how we present ourselves, since our actions, or our reactions, are by and large learned through our experiences. And in this sense our behaviors habitually become predicated by “learning what we live”. How often do we get the opportunity to communicate with our families about safety and home security issues? Do we choose to-and do we?
Many years ago when I had the privilege of having a mentor who took the time to teach me this profession, my mentor suggested to me was that if you wanted to catch a bad guy you needed to think like a bad guy. So he gave the simple example that it was like catching a mouse in a mouse trap. He reminded me that in order to catch a mouse in a “mouse trap” you needed to think like a mouse and understand the behaviors of that mouse. He said a mouse will most likely move about a room around the perimeter of that room. So if you wanted to catch that mouse the last place anyone would want to place a mouse trap was in the middle of the room. The sure way you could catch the mouse was to place that mouse trap somewhat on the perimeter of the room.

Once we understand certain behaviors we can then educate ourselves in understanding and then determining solutions to situations, and have a greater awareness and the opportunity to think about the remedies.So may I please suggest we initially attempt to communicate with our families and friends about making security a family matter by starting out and becoming aware of our environments around us; and then share our observances of those experiences so that we can use these points of knowledge to our advantage.
For instance, whenever I am invited into a family’s home, as I walk through the home I imagine it as my own home. When I listen and then have a conversation with these families who I'm meeting with, I reflect on them as my family; my wife and my children. By thinking of them as such, it’s simpler for me to identify with them allowing me to be open-minded and willing to “educate’ this family on family security issues that need attention to in order to enhance their security and safety.

Making security a family matter isn't about protecting what you have in a home. Making security a family matter is about making sure that our families have the awareness of their surroundings, so that they may have the knowledge of what do when a crisis may arise. There is no time like the present so let’s all make that commitment and bring making security a family matter to the kitchen table.
