Staying Safe in the Summer

While the summer months tend to conjure thoughts of sun and fun, they can also spell danger for your family and your home. For example, statistics show that most home burglaries occur during the vacation months of summer, as this is when most homes throughout the neighborhood are unoccupied and vulnerable.

Here are some simple tips for keeping your family and your home safe during the summer months:

• Many child accidents occur in or around swimming pools. Always supervise children while outside and near a pool. If swimming with children, be sure they are aware of the dangers of a pool and follow the proper pool rules.

• The summer months are usually very hot and humid. If going camping or participating in outdoor activities, be sure to stay hydrated with water or sports drinks. Always keep a first aid kit handy when participating in outdoors activities, especially if you plan to be in the heat for an extended period of time.

• If using fireworks, do not light them in or near a heavily wooded area, as this could cause a blazing fire. For safety purposes, it’s a good idea to have a hose or fire extinguisher on hand at all times.

• Since more burglaries occur in summer than in any other months, always arm your home security system, even if you’re just leaving for a short period of time. A home security system can greatly increase the chances of fending off an intruder should one attempt to gain access to your home.

• Close and lock all doors and windows, even if you’re home. An open window or door provides an intruder quick and easy access to your home and your possessions.

• If you’re going out of town, let a trusted neighbor know how long you will be gone, and give them a way to reach you in case of an emergency. Also, put your mail and newspaper service on hold until you return, and put your lights and TV on random timers to give the appearance that someone is home.
